The Youth in Government
Program started in 1984. Since its inception over 800 students
have participated in the program. The program is primarily for
juniors and seniors who have an interest in government and demonstrate
good verbal skills through writing and/or discussion. The Youth in Government Program is a semester long activity where the students meet at County facilities for seven all day sessions during the semester, to get hands on experience about County government. The interns will hear over twenty department presentations, observe a legislative session, interview a County Legislator and visit several county sites, such as - - the Public Safety Building, Health Care Facility, 911 Building, County Clerk's Building, the Leachate Treatment Plant and the Landfill. The interns conduct a simulated legislative session as their culminating activity, where they introduce, discuss and vote on resolutions of their choosing about a county matter. Each semester students from all fourteen schools can participate. Upon successful completion the interns will have the opportunity to earn a unit of college credit from Corning Community College, based on an agreement between the Youth Bureau and the College. The Youth in Government program is sponsored by the Steuben County Youth Bureau and the New York State Office of Children & Family Services.
