Steuben County Sheriff David V. Cole announces the certification of the first Steuben County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit in over a decade. Over the past 6 months, Deputy Shawn Shutt has been training his new partner, Daimon, with the Yates County K-9 Training Association. Deputy Shutt and Daimon took their New York State Certification Tests on January 30, 2013 and is now certified through the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services in the areas of Patrol and Tracking and Narcotics Detection.
Deputy Shutt and Daimon will be working patrol duty effective today and will be responding to incidents throughout Steuben County where the need for K-9 services is requested. Daimon will continue to train on a monthly basis to maintain his current certifications through DCJS and will be working with other units at the Sheriff’s Office, such as the Critical Incident Response Team and newly developed Warrant Squad, to assist in any requested K-9 needs.
Daimon will also be assigned to work with area schools under Sheriff Cole’s new Safe School Program, which is being developed to be implemented during the 2013-2014 school year. Deputy Shutt and Daimon are also available to assist any local or state law enforcement agency who contacts the Sheriff’s Office for assistance.
