The Steuben County Public Defender’s Office was established to provide legal representation to individuals that are “financially unable to obtain legal counsel without a substantial hardship” in the Steuben County Family Courts and Criminal Courts.
In the Family Courts, the Assistant Public Defenders represent qualified individuals in Custody; Visitation; Paternity; Family Offenses; Abuse; Neglect; and selected Violations of Court Orders proceedings. Applications for the services of the Public Defender’s Office will be available at the First Court Appearance. All applicants must bring the Affidavit of Financial Status to the Public Defender’s Office located at Room 309 of the Steuben County Office Building in Bath, New York.
In the Criminal Courts, the Assistant Public Defenders represent qualified individuals in Misdemeanor and Felony cases in all Town, Village, City and County Courts within Steuben County. Applications for the services of an assigned Attorney will be available at the First Court Appearance. Applicants must complete the Application for an assigned Attorney at arraignment and return it to the Court. This form is also available under the "Criminal Courts" tab on the left.
In any case where there is a “conflict of interest” and the Public Defender’s Office is disqualified, that case will be transferred to either the Conflict Office or the Assigned Counsel's Office who will then assign the case to an attorney.
In 2016, the Public Defender’s Office represented individuals in 1,653 criminal court cases and 752 Family Court cases.
The Steuben County Public Defender’s Office has six full time attorneys and seven part time attorneys.
