Brooks T. Baker


Brooks Baker joined the Steuben County District Attorney’s staff in January of 1994, shortly before his admission to the New York State Bar.  A career prosecutor, he began prosecuting primarily misdemeanor DWI cases immediately, assuming responsibility for felony DWI cases and vehicular homicides soon after.

He currently responsible for the prosecution of all DWI and related cases in Steuben County; the District Attorney’s Multiagency Drug Initiative; and, the Steuben County Civil Forfeiture Unit, while also maintaining a general felony case load.  As a trial attorney, he has tried numerous vehicular homicide cases, as well as other felonies ranging from drug crimes and DWI, to arson, sex crimes and murder.  Also responsible for appellate matters, he regularly argues before the Appellate Division, Fourth Department and has argued before the New York State Court of Appeals.

Aside from his prosecutorial duties, Mr. Baker frequently shares the lessons he has learned with others.  In that vein, he has taught classes for various Steuben County law enforcement agencies; the New York State Prosecutors Training Institute; the Steuben County Magistrates Association; and, the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina.  He has also co-authored/edited a manual on the prosecution of vehicular crimes for the New York State Prosecutors Training Institute, and is currently involved in similar project on a national level with the National District Attorneys’ Association. 

He is a graduate of Hobart College with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and Economics, and received his Juris Doctor cum laude from the Albany Law School in 1993.  Mr. Baker resides in Corning, with his wife and three children.
